YŪGEN

YŪGEN

Yūgen is a Japanese word without a direct translation. It describes a beauty that does not reveal itself right away: something hidden, felt between the lines, or visible only when several moments come together. It can be a valley in the fog, the silence after an important conversation, or a look that says more than words.

In photography it often lives behind the picture, in the moment before or after the shot, in what happens outside the frame, or in what the scene stirs up in whoever is looking. This exhibition is an invitation to look a little closer.

YŪGEN

Photographs from Japan

In December 2024 I traveled through Japan, from loud, packed cities to small villages that seemed to run on a different clock. What stayed with me most was how closely modern life and tradition sit next to each other, and how much of the Japanese way of seeing is about what is not said out loud.

Yūgen is a series of photographs from that trip. Some are portraits I arranged, others are moments I was lucky enough to be there for. I work in fashion and advertising, but reportage and portraits are what I do out of pure interest, and this exhibition grew out of that.

Mum & Dad Bar, Kiel · March 5 to May 31, 2025

The exhibition opened on March 8, 2025 at Mum & Dad Bar, my favorite bar in Kiel. So many of you came, and I'm still grateful for that evening. DJ i.am.d.n.a filled the room with Hip Hop and Trap and got everyone moving. Thank you to the whole Mum & Dad team for hosting and for making sure everything ran smoothly.
