SOUND OF MOVEMENT
Experimental Music Video · 3 min
Video exhibition · Luna Club, Kiel · December 3, 2021
Sound of Movement is an experimental dance film and a project I had been thinking about for years. Making it real took a big team, the support of Kiel Sailing City, and a lot of trust from everyone involved.
The film pairs a voguing inspired choreography by Minh2 Nguyen with a techno track composed by Marc Wolf. Marc also runs the Luna Club in Kiel, where we later showed the film as a video exhibition under Covid restrictions.
Besides directing, I was responsible for the lighting concept and the edit, and that is the part I'm most proud of. The hard shifts between light and dark follow the beat of the music, sometimes very fast. How exactly it works I'd like to keep to myself, but the clue is somewhere between the light and the cut.
In the second part of the film, the music changes hands. Aaliyha Thanisha Philipps and Shane Stubbs wear motion sensors by Instruments of Things, a start-up from Kiel, and create the sound themselves through their movement. Working with them was a real highlight for me.
I had the chance to build this team from people whose work I admire, and the film exists because of them. Thank you all. Everyone is listed in the credits below.
